"30% off, plus an extra 20% at checkout" reads like half price. It isn't: $100 drops to $70, then to $56 — a 44% total discount. The gap grows with bigger numbers, and retailers rely on shoppers adding percentages instead of multiplying. The other classic: comparing percentages across different base prices. A 50% sticker on an inflated "original" price can still cost more than a fair price with a modest discount — the final price is the only number that pays the bill.

How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the percentage and divide by 100: 20% off $80 saves $16, so you pay $64. The calculator shows both the savings and the final price live.
Is 30% off plus an extra 20% the same as 50% off?
No — stacked discounts apply one after the other. $100 at 30% off is $70; an extra 20% off that is $56. That's 44% total, not 50%. Stores know most shoppers add the numbers, which is exactly why "extra % off" promotions exist.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount as a decimal): $56 after 30% off means 56 ÷ 0.7 = $80 original. The reverse mode does this for you.
Is a bigger percentage always the better deal?
Only when comparing the same item at the same base price. 50% off an inflated "original" price can cost more than 20% off a fair one — compare final prices, not percentages.
