How to knot an alpha pattern
Set up the base strings
Alpha bracelets have base strings that run straight down and a working string that knots across them. Use the background color for the base strings.
Knot row by row
Each square in the chart is one knot. Tie the background color where the chart shows the background, and switch to the letter color for the letters.
Finish the ends
Knot a few plain rows or a braid at both ends so the bracelet reaches around the wrist, then tie it off.
How long will the bracelet be?
With standard six-strand embroidery floss, one row of alpha knots is roughly 2 mm tall. A name with 5 letters and a little space at both ends needs about 35 rows, so about 7 cm of pattern. Most wrists need 15 to 17 cm, so add plain rows, braids or a repeat of the word to reach the right length. Thicker yarn makes every row taller.

What is an alpha friendship bracelet pattern?
An alpha pattern is a grid where every square is one knot. Unlike normal chevron patterns, alpha bracelets can show letters, names and small pictures, because each knot can be a different color.
How many colors do I need?
For a name you need two colors: one for the background and one for the letters. The edge stripe adds a third color. The color key under the chart shows how many knots of each color the pattern has.
Which letters and symbols are supported?
Capital letters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9, a heart, a star and a few symbols such as ! ? & + and -. Lowercase letters are turned into capitals so they stay readable at 7 knots tall. Umlauts become the plain letter.
Can I print the pattern?
Yes. Print sends only the chart and color key to the printer. You can also download it as a PNG to keep it on your phone while you knot.

No. The pattern is drawn in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or saved.
