PNG vs SVG: what changes
A PNG stores pixels, so it gets blurry when you scale it up and a cutting machine can't follow its edges. An SVG stores the outlines as paths. It stays sharp at any size, and Cricut or Silhouette cut exactly along those paths. Tracing means finding those outlines: the converter groups similar colors, follows the edge of every shape and smooths it into curves. Fewer colors and the Smooth setting give clean shapes with fewer points, which cut faster and weed more easily.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make an SVG for Cricut from a PNG?
Upload the PNG, choose Cut file (1 color) for a single-color design or Color layers for layered vinyl, then download the SVG. In Cricut Design Space choose Upload, then Upload Image, and select the SVG file.
Why does my SVG have so many small pieces?
Photos and images with soft shadows create many tiny shapes. Lower the number of colors, set Detail to Smooth, or use a simpler image such as a logo or clip art.
Can I remove the white background?
Yes. Remove the background color is on by default and leaves out the color that fills the edges of the image. You can also click any color under the preview to leave that layer out.
Does it work with Silhouette Studio?
Silhouette Studio opens SVG files from the Designer Edition upward. With the free Basic Edition, open the SVG in Inkscape first and save it as DXF.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Tracing runs in your browser. The image and the SVG never leave your device.
