How to use the worksheet
Look at the model
The first row shows the name in solid letters. Talk about the letters first: which one is tall, which one sits between the lines.
Trace the dots
Your child follows the dotted letters with a pencil or crayon, always starting at the top of each letter.
Write alone
The empty rows at the bottom are for writing the name without help. Laminate the page to use it again with a dry-erase marker.
What the lines mean
Every row has three guide lines. Capital letters and tall letters like l, h and k reach from the baseline up to the top line. Small letters like a, m and o stop at the dashed middle line. Letters with a tail, like g, p and y, hang below the baseline. The letters use Andika, a typeface designed by SIL International for early readers, with the simple one-story a and g that children learn first.
Frequently asked questions
What age are name tracing worksheets for?
Most children start tracing their name between 3 and 5 years old. Use 5 or 6 rows with big letters for preschool and 8 or 10 rows for kindergarten and first grade.
Can I make worksheets for a whole class?
Yes. Type or paste one name per line. Every name gets its own page, and Print sends all pages to the printer in one go.
Should my child learn capital or lowercase letters first?
Many teachers start with the first letter capital and the rest lowercase (Emma), because that is how the name is written at school. Choose All capitals if your child is just starting and finds capitals easier.
Can I use the worksheets in my classroom?
Yes. The worksheets are free for home and classroom use. You can print as many copies as you need.
Are the names saved or uploaded?
No. The worksheet is drawn in your browser. The names you type are not uploaded, saved or sent anywhere.
